Deirdre Maciak started experiencing essential tremor symptoms during middle school and was diagnosed with the condition during her sophomore year in high school. It affected her ability to exercise, play the saxophone in her various school bands and caused her a great deal of stress. It impacted her confidence and she became self-conscious.
Because of her condition, she made the choice to pursue a degree where she can make an impact. She is considering nursing or biology.
“I want to be able to have a positive impact on others who struggle with lifelong conditions and have the opportunity to either research new drugs or related treatments that would make the lives of those who deal with these types of conditions better,” Maciak said.
She wrote a blog about her experiences with essential tremor, which is posted on the IETF’s Tremor Talk blog site.
