IETF Funded Research 2005
Dr. Elan Louis was awarded $26,000 in additional funding in 2004 to continue studies related to the Essential Tremor Centralized Brain Repository at Columbia University. Dr. Louis will study in a systematic fashion the brain changes that occur in patients with ET. In addition to conventional methods, he will use state-of-the-art scientific methods (immuno-histochemistry and stereology) to study the brain abnormalities in ET. To make sure that the repository receives brain cell donations that represent pure ET, Dr. Louis will reimburse donors the cost to videotape their tremor and submit it to the repository. Verifying the existence of pure ET is important, because if other conditions such as dystonia or Parkinson’s disease also exist, data on ET can not be interpreted effectively.
